Paul Melly, editor
of Gulf States Newsletter, has been for more than two decades a journalist
specialising in Africa, the Middle East, trade, finance and development
issues. He has written widely in a number of respected British, American
and Canadian newspapers and journals on his areas of interest, gaining
an international reputation as a fair-minded but dogged reporter and interpreter
of developments in the Middle East and Africa, and in certain niche sectors
of the financial markets.
Among his previous jobs and assignments since leaving Oxford University
(where he read French) and taking advanced studies in journalism, Paul
was assistant editor of Africa Analysis (1994-2000), and wrote from London
on development issues and business for The Globe & Mail (Toronto), 1987-92.
He has published articles in a wide number of newspapers including The
Guardian, The Banker and the Financial Times.
Paul has, for many years, worked with the CbI team on International Trade
Finance - both when it was owned by the Financial Times group and since
its takeover by Informa - and has also written extensively on credit insurance
and associated subjects, on which he is a rare authority working in the
media.
For GSN and CbI, Paul travels regularly in the Gulf, North Africa, Europe
and North America. He also contributes to African Energy, with a focus
on francophone oil producers and governance issues.
